Powerfully Passive The Contradiction in Frankensteins Women - Free Essay Example

Frankensteins women are, as a rule, extremely passive. Although there is a lack of prominent female characters, the emphasis on the mistakes and hubris of the male characters hints more feminist interpretations. The adherence to conventional gender roles and the general sidelining of female characters, instead of being sexist, serves to call attention to the negative qualities of the male characters, illustrate the reliance that men had on women, and highlight real issues that women of the time faced. While Shelley did not include any major female characters, that isnt necessarily such a bad thing in this particular story. Frankenstein places a heavy focus on the mistakes of men, and certainly doesnt paint many important male characters in a positive light. Victors hubris, pursuit of glory, and lack of consideration for moral boundaries are among the primary themes in the novel. This places him as a stark opposite to the women in his life. The author doesnt give female characters much attention, but were left with a better impression of them than of most of the male characters. In fact, all of the female characters seem to embody high moral standards. The selfless, patience, and kindness that these characters live by are important characteristics of the ideal Victorian woman, and all of the female characters have warm, tender dispositions that make them wonderful caregivers. Elizabeth in particular is said to continually [endeavor] to contribute to the happiness of others, entirely forgetful of herself (73). Although she is relegated to the background and eventually killed, she is an excellent example of the traditional role of women as maternal, guiding figures. It could be argued that the dichotomy between the prominent but relatively immoral men and the virtuous but little-noticed women is meant to call attention to how much society really needed its women, who would happily work in the background to keep things running smoothly. A further point towards the necessity of women is, however odd it is to say from a modern perspective, the idea of a man truly needing a woman in his life. When the male characters did not have a female presence in their lives, things tended to go wrong. When Caroline†the primary female influence in Victors life†died, Elizabeth was the only one who could comfort him; the lonely monster, who had no one to love him, cried in misery thatno Eve soothed [his] sorrows, or shared [his] thoughts (145). Both of these characters see women as embodying comfort, acceptance, and fulfillment. Frankensteins monster feels that he is somehow incomplete because he lacks a female influence. The most blatant feminist sentiment in Frankenstein comes into play when Victor chooses not to create a wife for the monster. Victors entire motivation for refusing to create a female monster is fear†fear of a woman who would be self-assured and have a mind of her own; a woman could not be controlled, perhaps even by the first monster. Would she be headstrong and stubborn, rather than modest and selfless like a proper woman? More importantly, if she were murderous, could they stop her from destroying everything in her path? If she were licentious, would a race of devilsbe propagated upon the earth (119)? Victor was finally forced to acknowledge that the creatures he created could have thoughts and needs and personalities, and he didnt like the implications of that. A powerful, sexual woman is far from the norm in Victorian society, and Victors horror at the idea comes across as less due to a moral rejection and more a reflection of what he sees as a perversion of femininity. In his eyes, women are to be submissive, docile, passive†exactly the opposite of what a second monster could turn out to be, and exactly what most of the women in his life have been. This is one of the few times when Shelley is so blatant in her feminism, and is probably the best argument for a feminist interpretation of Frankenstein. Perhaps the female characters seem sidelined simply because this isnt their story. Unlike in modern times, Victorian men and women were said to occupy separate spheres, only rarely meeting and interacting; perhaps it simply seemed natural to Shelley and to readers at the time that a story about men would include relatively little interaction with women, just as a story about women would have few prominent male characters. Frankensteins portrayal of women is largely up to interpretation, but I believe that Shelleys agenda was primarily to illustrate the importance of traditional female roles and highlight the problems in the male view of those same roles. Many feminist texts emphasize the importance of breaking free from what women were supposed to do; however, I think that Shelley was making a different point by reminding us that those roles arent inherently bad, and that they are actually necessary to a functional society. People with the willingness to forsake the spotlight and support others are crucial to keeping a home, community, or country running, and Shelleys women, while not the most prominent or plot-relevant of characters, are an excellent example of those more traditional ideals.

Research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) indicates that women often experience new or different physical symptoms as long as a month or more before experiencing heart attacks. Among the 515 women studied, 95% said they knew their symptoms were new or different a month or more before experiencing their heart attack, or Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI). The symptoms most commonly reported were unusual fatigue (70.6%), sleep disturbance (47.8%), and shortness of breath (42.1%). Many women never had chest pains Surprisingly, fewer than 30% reported having chest pain or discomfort prior to their heart attacks, and 43% reported have no chest pain during any phase of the attack. Most doctors, however, continue to consider chest pain as the most important heart attack symptom in both women and men. The 2003 NIH study, titled Womens Early Warning Symptoms of AMI, is one of the first to investigate womens experience with heart attacks, and how this experience differs from mens. Recognition of symptoms that provide an early indication of heart attack, either imminently or in the near future, is critical to forestalling or preventing the disease. In a NIH press release, Jean McSweeney, PhD, RN, Principal Investigator of the study at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, said, Symptoms such as indigestion, sleep disturbances, or weakness in the arms, which many of us experience on a daily basis, were recognized by many women in the study as warning signals for AMI. Because there was considerable variability in the frequency and severity of symptoms, she added, we need to know at what point these symptoms help us predict a cardiac event. There are several ethical issues that may present as barriers to counselors and therapist as well as the people that they serve.Whether it is in a group setting or in an individual setting, professional counselor and therapist must be careful staying within code of ethics. Group counseling can offer several relationships that assist individuals in growth and problem solving. Within group therapy, the participants are encouraged by the leader to discuss issues that may have brought them into therapy openly and honestly. Group leaders work hard to create an environment that is built from trust and acceptance and encourages participants to support one another. There are several codes of ethics that counselor must adhere to while leading group sessions. According to the ACA Code of Ethics, in a group setting, counselors take reasonable precautions to protect clients from physical, emotional, or psychological trauma. (A. 8. b. According to Jacobs (2012), dual relationships are relationships that exist in addition to the therapeutic relationship established between the leader and the members. This type of relationship needs to enter into with caution by both the group leader and the participant. A study was performed using 894 employees and their 222 immediate supervisors to test ethical leadership. The employees and their supervisors worked financial institution located in the United States.The participants were men and women of all ages on average of 27 for the employees and 36 for the supervisors. They were of all races including White, Hispanic, African American and Asian. All the participants that were selected had at least a high school diploma and worked for the company for at least 6 months in many different departments. The researchers collected data used in the research on two different occasions in a five week span from both the supervisors and employees. The researchers gave each participant a survey packet with a cover letter inviting them to participate in the research.The researchers explained to the participants using the cover letter the purpose of the study and what they hoped to accomplish by using them. The cover letter also ensured each participant that confidentiality would be used throughout the study. The participants were assured that all answers that were provided on the surveys would remain confidential and would not affect their employment. The participants were then informed that they will be receiving another survey in five weeks and stated that it was very important that the participants participated in both surveys. The surveys that the supervisors and employees received were different surveys and neither group knew what the other groups surveys were about. The supervisors were asked to complete a questionnaire that asked them questions regarding their own personalities that included agreeableness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism. They were also asked to give some of their personal information such as gender, age, and race. Another study that failed due to ethical issues was the lead based paint study that did not advise the low income families the purpose of the study as well as the risk that their children may face with the lead based paint. These studies were all performed using disadvantaged individuals that were not advised of any ethical rights that they had as a participant.The participants that were selected in these researches were also uneducated and not know or understand their ethical rights if they were explained to them. If there is any harm that can be done to a participant during a research they should be notified of the risk before the research is conducted.The researchers should also follow justice and ensure that each participant is treated fairly while participating in the research as well as be protected from any harm during the research. There should not be one group that is protected from harm while another is not protected during research. According to Knight, Roosa, and Umana-Taylor (2009), cultural competence is the biggest barrier to a researcher’s ability to conduct studies in an ethical manner with div erse populations. The researchers display a lack of understanding of the values, beliefs, and lifestyles of the ethnic minority or economically disadvantaged groups. Researchers need to understand the values and beliefs of all populations who they wish to study so that they can develop effective ways of recruiting participants to do research studies on. There are ethical issues that present as barriers in screening clergy or candidates for religious professions for denominations that exclude homosexual clergy. Due to the high number of problems with appointing people to positions within the church many denominations like Christian and Jewish have selected psychologist to come in and screen potential candidates for professions within the church.These denominations are relying on the psychologist to weed out candidates that have a history of pedophilia, alcoholism and substance abuse, and psychological traits or disorders and they may not be able to function as a member of clergy. Psychologists have ethical obligations that they must adhere to when screening applicants for these positions. The must be treat the applicant with dignity and respect. P sychologist must also be careful when conducting screening for denominations not to ban anyone from the position due to their sexual orientation. I know that some clients may not want to open up in the beginning but as they see others open up and share their stories they will begin to open up as well. According to Jacobs (2012) exercises can be used for the following reasons: to increase the comfort level, provide leader with useful information, generate discussions and focus the group, to shift the focus, deepen the focus, to provide opportunity for experiential learning, to provide fun and relaxation.Ethical issues present as barriers in counseling both individual and group sessions. In the case of Christine Busalacchi, she was involved in a car accident on May 29, 1987 where he was left in a persistent vegetable case. The two scenarios are similar, only that Cruzan preferred to die rather than stay a vegetable while Busalacchi did not indicate to anyone. According to the American law, a mentally sound person has the right to refuse medical attention even if this will lead to death. However, the difficult part arises when the patient does not have the ability to communicate his or her own decision like the case of Busalacchi. The dilemma arises as to who is supposed to make the decision and how the decision is made. In the case of Busalacchi, the parents have the right to represent the patient but they do not have the obligation to make the decision. On the other hand, Cruzan’s parents had the right to make the decision because there was proof to indicate that she preferred death than living as a vegetable. Therefore, the law states that the patient has the right to die. The decision is only vested on the patient. However, if the patient is in a vegetable state, the guardian must proof that the patient would have preferred to exercise his or her rig ht in such a situation (Porter, Johnson Warren, 2005). Health care professionals do not have a right to give considerations in their course of caring for terminal patients. Additionally, the health care professionals do not have obligation of providing a futile treatment to the patient. This is because according to the laws of the health care professionals like doctors, the main priority is to ensure that the patients are kept alive at all the times. Doctors are obliged to save the lives of people not to facilitate death. This is also applicable to other health care professionals. They are all obliged to save the lives of the patients. For instance, in the two situations, they should not consider their rights to die instead they should consider saving her life (Friend, 2011). Therefore, health care professionals do not have the right or the obligation to consider patients rights to die. According to the law, family members of a patient to do not have the right or obligation on patient’s right to die. This is because nobody has the power over another person’s life. For this reason, the government does not allow anybody to make decisions for another person involving death. In the case of Busalaccho, the court had a difficult time to make a ruling because the parents do not have the right to make the decision (Shah Williams, 2003). However, on the case of Cruzan, the court gave the ruling in favor of the parents not because the parents made the decision but because there was prove implying that the patient did not wish to be kept in a vegetable state. It is argued that, there is no evidence proving that Schiavo wanted to die if she was of sound mind in such a situation. Therefore, they should keep her on medical treatment until she dies for natural causes. Caring and curing for the patient are the most confusing words in the medical treatment of a patient. In the perspective of the medical professionals, their main aim is to offer treatment to the patient as they exercise due care. In this situation, they do not have the right to facilitate death just because they care for somebody who is in pain. On the side of the family, there priority is to care for their patients (Porter, Johnson Warren, 2005). Therefore, they often feel that it is better to honor patient’s right to die if there is not treatment and he or she is in a lot of pain. However, considering all other factors, curing should be the number one priority. Ethical principles in relation to patient’s right to die are a great dilemma to the medical profession. In most cases, ethical principles are affected by moral distress. The patient and the guardian they know the moral judgment but they do not have the right to act (Rushton et.al 2012). According to the ethical principles, patients should be allowed to make those decisions that affect their lives. This is based on the respect to anatomy. On the other hand, based on justice, ethical decisions should be made in consideration of those people who are affected by the decisions. The Red Scare of 1919 Essay The Red Scare of 1919 was the first of two major periods in American History when fear of radicalism culminated in the persecution and deportation of Americans thought to be radicals (communists, anarchists, or socialists). An unprecedented event, the Red Scare of 1919 exhibits how popular suppression and fear of radicalism can have disastrous consequences. The causes of the Red Scare are numerous and varied, however, one of the most important factors that contributed to the scare was the acts passed during World War I. During the war, social-anarchists did not support American involvement, nor did they support the subsequent draft. In response to the dissent, Congress passed the Sedition Act (actually, amended the Espionage Act). It was important in relation to the Red Scare because it allowed for censoring of radical literature as well as regulation of the mail. It was directed against subversives and, therefore, cast a very broad net. Because of the Sedition act, many individuals were arrested for distributing media that criticized the American military (Eugene Debs, head of the Socialist Party, was one of them). It was in response to this act that Justices Oliver Wendell Holmes set forth the clear and present danger doctrine and marked the beginning of modern First Amendment jurisprudence. Therefore, the Sedition Act of 1918 was important in the imposition of censorship after World War I. Reds were seen as a danger to the American system of government, economic stability, and way of life. In this sense, the war produced an era of intolerance for subversives, and it was this attitude that provided a ripe setting for the Red Scare of 1919 to take place. The Sedition Act was the legal excuse people used to regulate, censor, prosecute, and deport Americans thought to be radicals. Intolerance during the war would cause Americans to fear immigrants and radicals afterward, and it would only take a little spark to cause full blown hysteria. The Bolshevik revolution in Russia only deepened Americans fears because they felt the same thing could happen on their soil. The labor unrest following the end of World War I would prove to be instrumental in igniting the fire that was the Red Scare of 1919. The years after the war were marked by economic turmoil and labor unrest. At first, laborers expected the good working conditions, a staple of the wartime economy, to continue after the war was over. The economy was in good shape because war time contracts had cased industry to boom. Labor was supported by the government during the war in order to keep production levels high. After the war ended, however, contracts were canceled, which caused rising unemployment, and managers stopped cooperating with labor. Also, the cost of living had risen 99% by 1919 because of inflation. Without government support, labor unions began to strike in order to recapture the gains they had made during the war. One such strike took place in Seattle and involved sixty thousand workers (Painter, 346). Soon, this strike and others were labeled as a communist effort to undermine the American economy. The cycle of hysteria had begun. Labor unions were seen as Bolshevik sponsored organizations, and union members were labeled as communists. America began to become afraid because they saw there way of life slipping away. This fear would soon turn into action. The fear of radicalism stemmed, as stated earlier, from the era of intolerance during World War I. Propaganda techniques that once united the American public against Germany and hyphenated Americans during the war were easily converted into an instrument to cast a negative light on Bolsheviks. After all, America was not happy with Russia leaving the war and instituting a form of economy that was directly opposite of capitalism. Bolsheviks, therefore, were seen as a threat to democracy. Likewise, the forming of the Communist International was seen as an attempt to spread communism throughout the world. People felt insecure after the war, and this feeling was only bolstered by the idea that communists were working to overthrow the American economy and government. When a series of mail bombs were discovered, one of which exploding at Attorney General Palmers home, they were labeled as a communist effort to undermine America. The Red Scare of 1919 had begun. Labor unions were hardest hit. However, anyone seen as radical was persecuted and labeled a red. Elected officials who were members of the socialist party  were dismissed from office. In fact, the New York State Assembly dismissed five elected socialists. However, the most vivid example of the extent of the scare is illustrated by the Palmer raids, in which six thousand people were arrested and five hundred were deported. There were very few Communists in the United States in 1919, yet Palmer viewed them as a huge threat. Encouraged by Congress, Palmer began a series of showy and well publicized raids against radicals and leftists. Striking without warning and without warrants, Palmers men smashed union offices and the headquarters of Communist and Socialist organizations. They concentrated, whenever possible, on aliens rather than citizens, because aliens had fewer rights. As quickly as it had began, the Red Scare of 1919 ended. Although the hysteria had subsided, consequences still arose. The scare, as well as the raids, was seen as unproductive. Of the numerous arrests made in association with the scare, only a small percent of the suspected communists were deported. Therefore, government persecution of subversives only stopped because it was not working as well as hoped, yet the fear and hatred of radicals was still looming in the distance. It would again resurface in the 1950s during the McCarthy era when another Red Scare, more organized and brutal, would take place. America had learned how to deal with reds, and these lessons would be effectively applied in the next crusade against communism in America. Finally, a more visible and immediate consequence of the Red Scare of 1919 was the mass fear of immigration that took place afterwards. The highly visual raids by Palmer had a deep effect on Americans because the raids exposed the enemy. Restrictions and quotas were placed on immigration, especially on those people coming from Eastern Europe. Fear of communists turned into hatred of immigrants, and American citizens would have a hard time excepting new arrivals. In many cases, immigrants were automatically labeled as subversives, anarchists, and communists. The association between immigrants and social upheaval would have a negative effect on American immigrants in the years to come, a fact most vividly portrayed through the trial of Sacco and Venzetti. Also, for many years to come, unions were seen in a negative light. The association of communism with unions would continue  to be a hindrance for labor and the advancement of labor reforms.

The heavy mist/fog outside could mean that she is seriously worried as she is weighed down with worry and concern. She is still half asleep and as she sees the billowing mist, this gives us a sort of foggy appearance of what she is feeling like (like someone who has just woken up and cant distinguish anything properly). The ‘Muslin' fabric is telling us that her brain is not alert or sharp as she is looking, but not taking anything in. She is still in shock about the bad news and is still trying to wake up which further implies how she is feeling. C. 1) The sound and pace of the passage is very quick and fast flowing. Ernest Hemingway uses mainly two syllable words throughout, which adds to the already fast-flowing passage. This is vital in that the story needs to be quick, so that the character in the story can finish his book and so that we don't get bored with the story line. 2) â€Å"All you have to do is write one true sentence†¦Ã¢â‚¬  I think what Hemingway is saying is that all you need to do is to write a proper, structured sentence in order to get your story flowing again. A ‘true' sentence shows instead of tells, uses the five senses, uses strong active verbs, does not repeat oneself, doesn't use unnecessary words and uses metaphors and word pictures. That is a ‘true' sentence in which Hemingway describes. 3) I think that everyone has there own outlook on life, so we therefore all have different opinions on what something means. When Hemingway says that metaphorical language is ‘ornamental', i have to agree with him, because it is a way of flowering up something and it makes people use their own imagination. Thus, all the metaphors will be will be completely different and mean other things to other people. I do associate transparent language to truthfulness because you don't have to use your own imagination as all the facts are there. It doesn't use any many metaphors as there is literally only one layer of depth to something. I don't think that metaphorical language gets between reality and the reader. All people have different thoughts on the metaphors etc. So the outcome of one extract will be different to that off others.

Personal Customs Exemptions for Returning Canadians

If you are a Canadian resident or temporary resident of Canada returning to Canada from a trip outside the country, or a former Canadian resident returning to live in Canada, you may qualify for a personal exemption to bring a certain value of goods into Canada without having to pay the regular duties. You will still have to pay duties, taxes and any provincial/territory assessments on the value of goods above your personal exemption. Children, even babies, are entitled to a personal exemption. A parent or guardian can make a declaration on the childs behalf as long as the goods being declared are for the childs use. The amount you claim for your personal exemption must be reported in Canadian dollars. Use a foreign exchange converter to change foreign currencies into Canadian dollars. The personal exemption for returning Canadian residents depends on the length of time you have been outside of Canada. The personal exemptions for Canadian residents have been increased effective June 1, 2012. The new exemption limits go up to CAN$200 from CAN$50 for absences of 24 hours or longer, and up to CAN$800 if youre out of the country longer than 48 hours. After a 7-day absence, you are allowed to include goods that will follow you by mail or another delivery method. Outside Canada for Less Than 24 Hours No exemption. Outside Canada for 24 Hours or More If you are outside Canada for 24 hours or more, you may claim a personal exemption of up to CAN$200 worth of goodsthe goods must accompany youtobacco or alcohol may  not be claimed in this exemption Note: If you bring in goods worth more than CAN$200 in total, you cannot claim this exemption.
